Tra i poliziotti che giungono sulla scena del delitto c’è un esperto negoziatore di ostaggi, il Detective Rob Nunally (Billy Burke), l’unico agente al quale è consentito l’accesso alla abitazione. A sorpresa, Crawford confessa subito di aver sparato a sua moglie, ma Nunally è totalmente sopraffatto dall’incredulità per prestargli la dovuta attenzione: sul pavimento giace infatti, in una pozza di sangue, la sua amante, della quale non ha mai veramente conosciuto l’identità. Nonostante Jennifer sia stata colpita a bruciapelo, Nunally si rende conto che non è morta. Crawford viene immediatamente arrestato e chiamato in giudizio subito dopo la confessione. Apparentemente si tratta di un caso scontato per il rampante assistente alla Procura Distrettuale Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling), che in realtà sta per lasciare l’attuale incarico per dedicarsi a mansioni ben più redditizie presso un ufficio legale privato.
