Questa scelta di accasare Harriet metterà in moto una serie di rivelazioni, corteggiamenti e dichiarazioni che avranno come protagonista la borghesi della cittadina. A fare da sfondo a questa ricerca del marito ideale per Harriet saranno le feste e i ricevimenti, che creeranno non pochi equivoci tra la giovane Emma, la sua cara amica e alcuni pretendenti.
